Saint James Outreach Ministries

Our outreach ministries are focused on assisting those in need in our home town, the greater Lincoln community.  This emphasis follows the advice of Saint Augustine of Hippo when he wrote, and we paraphrase—We are to love everyone equally, but there is no way we can help everyone. There are many people and the world is large. The ones we can do something for are the ones closest to us. With this in mind our outreach projects include:

†   LABYRINTH: is a single, non-branching path. It has one way in and one way out. It can be used for private or group meditation. It is available to all that desire to use it.

†   OPERATION WARM HEART:  annually we contribute funds to assist our Air Force neighbors in need.  The funds are administered by the Beale AFB First Sergeant’s Council.  In 2015 we contributed nearly $1,150 to this fund.

†   RED SHOES: each year we provide gift cards to families needing assistance with back to school clothing.  In 2015, $1,800 was donated and provided thirty-six $50 gift cards to families for the purchase of clothing and shoes for their children.

†   SCHOLARSHIPS: each year we provide scholarships to graduating Lincoln High School students to assist them with college expenses.  In addition, we have a music scholar program where LHS Choir members augment our choir each week.  Each music scholar receives a stipend to be used for choir activities.

†   HOLIDAY FOOD BASKETS AND CHILDREN’S PARTY: every year we distribute complete Thanksgiving baskets to approximately 30 families.  The children in those families return just prior to Christmas for a party where every child will receive a gift purchased specifically for them. We will usually have in excess of 70 children receiving gifts. At that time, we also distribute pork roasts to each family.

†   BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS:  an annual celebration of the Feast of Saint Francis with the Blessing of the Animals in Beermann's Plaza, downtown Lincoln.  It is held on the first or second Saturday in October. We also visit Field Haven, a feline rescue facility serving Lincoln, and Ride To Walk, a neurological therapeutic horseback riding facility in Lincoln.  At both of these venues we conduct a brief service then individually bless every animal and staff member. On the Sunday nearest St. Francis Day, October 4, our 10 a.m. Eucharist includes a blessing of the animals service.

†   CARING MINISTRY:  The Caring Ministry provides support to those in need on an as needed basis.  In addition it supports a Blue Christmas service for those being challenged by the holidays.  Sometimes Christmas isn't the happiest time of the year.

†   Our church and parish hall are used by a predominantly Spanish speaking congregation on Sunday afternoons.

†   Additionally we provide meeting spaces for AA and TOPS (Take Pounds Off Sensibly) and our parish hall for use as a polling place.

It has been said that a good test of a congregation’s outreach programs is:

“If you ceased to exist, would anybody notice your absence?”

Saint James would be missed.
